PROFILE OF CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
 

CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT, established in 1984, caters to the needs of Engineering and Technology degree programmes. The first two semesters of the four-year degree B.E/B.Tech. programme is common to all students. The students are imparted knowledge in fundamental aspects of Applied Chemistry, Environmental Science and trained to acquire laboratory skills useful to their studies in their subsequent years.

The department has been recognized by the Anna University as Research Centre which permits students to join Ph.D and MS (by Research) programmes under the supervision of the recognized supervisors of the department.

The department is carrying out research in the following areas.

  • Interpenetrating networks
  • Bioinorganic Chemistry
  • Biomimetic Catalysis
  • Kinetics and Mechanism
  • Effluent Treatment
The department has 7 well qualified faculty members, of which, four are accomplished Doctorates, while others have M.Phil./ M.Tech. Degree. One faculty member is pursuing her Ph.D. in Anna University in the field of Environmental Science.

Motivated by the encouragement and goodwill of the management, the faculty members are involved in research, publishing their articles in journals of international repute and presenting papers in conferences.

Two faculty members of the department have received their Ph.D degree from Anna University under faculty development programme. Three faculty members of the department have received Young Scientist Fellowship award from the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology and DST, Government of India. Two faculty members carried out their post-doctoral fellowship in Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology Inha University, South Korea and National San Yat Sen University & National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan.

Two of our faculty members have the distinction of having highest number of publications in journals of international reputation. The MoUs with IGCAR, CLRI and Anna University have enhanced the research activities of the department.

One of the faculty members is member in the Academic Council of University of Madras, Member in Board of Studies for Polymer Science, University of Madras.

The department has received Rs 9 lakhs from AICTE for the project Investigation and development of cost effective fibre-glass distribution structure.
